Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Tomasz Szczęsny has announced his retirement from football, after being left a free agent at the end of his contract with Juventus, with a post on his social profile: "I left my hometown of Warsaw in June 2006 to join Arsenal with a dream: to make a living from football.

"I didn't know it would be the start of a lifelong journey. I didn't know I would play for the biggest clubs in the world and represent my country 84 times. I didn't know that I would not only make a living from football, but that football would become my entire life. I didn't just achieve my dreams, I went places my imagination wouldn't have dared to take me.

"I played at the highest level with the best players in history without ever feeling inferior. I made lifelong friends, created unforgettable memories and met people who have had an incredible impact on my life. Everything I have and everything I am I owe to the beautiful game of football... But I also gave the game everything I had. I gave the game 18 years of my life, every day, without excuses. Today, even though my body still feels ready for the challenge, my heart is gone. I feel that now is the time to dedicate all my attention to my family, to my fantastic wife Marina and to our two wonderful children Liam and Noelia".

Wojciech Szczęsny played in England and Italy during his career, with Brentford, Arsenal, Roma and finally Juventus, collecting over two hundred appearances for the latter.

Wearing the Polish national team jersey, with which he made 84 appearances in total, he took part in two editions of the FIFA World Cup (2018 and 2022) and four editions of the European Football Championship (2012, 2016, 2020 and 2024).

The last match played by the Polish goalkeeper was with the Polish national team in the last edition of the European Football Championship in the match against Austria on June 21, 2024.

His accolades include 3 Italian championships, 3 Italian Cups, 2 Italian Super Cups (won wearing the Juventus shirt) as well as 2 FA Cups and 1 Community Shield (won wearing the Arsenal shirt).
