PSV Eindhoven consolidates Eredivisie dominance and shows strength in historic year
PSV Eindhoven remains on fire in the Eredivisie. After the commanding victory over FC Utrecht, this season's second-placed team in the league, Peter Bosz's squad solidified their lead at the top and reaffirmed their status as one of the most dominant teams in the Netherlands. With a performance the coach himself described as "top-level," PSV demonstrated their ability to impose their game against direct rivals.

A strong opponent, but no match for PSV FC Utrecht came into the game in good form, sitting in second place in the Eredivisie standings, which made the match a crucial test for both teams. Despite that, PSV showed from the first minutes that they were ready to take control. High pressing, quick ball recovery, and the ability to dictate the pace were the key ingredients of a dominant performance.
Peter Bosz didn't hold back in his praise: "When you come here to play, you know things can get tough. But it wasn't difficult. The boys pressed well, recovered the ball quickly, and overall played very well."
This control was reflected in PSV's ball possession, one of the pillars of their game. According to Bosz, the team kept the opponent chasing: "That's important because it means the opponent is constantly following us. When they have the ball, they rest instead of moving freely." This strategy wore Utrecht down, allowing PSV to exploit spaces and create scoring opportunities.
The star of the show
If one player deserves the spotlight in the win over Utrecht, it's Ricardo Pepi. The forward was simply lethal, securing the 100th goal of the calendar year for PSV, a milestone that further reinforces the team's offensive strength. With four games left in 2024, PSV has a great chance of breaking their own historic record for goals scored in a single year.
Defensive solidity from goalkeeper to forward line
Beyond the sharp attack, PSV's win was marked by a defensive solidity that starts from the goalkeeper up to the forwards. Peter Bosz underlined how Ivan Perišić was surprisingly playing as a right-back, an example of versatility and commitment: "Perišić handled it well. He unexpectedly played at right-back and did very well." Balance and response in the second half
Although the score was tied 1-1 at halftime, PSV didn't lose their cool or tactical organization. Bosz acknowledged that Utrecht might have gained confidence from the tie but highlighted PSV's superiority: "I can imagine that Utrecht gained strength from that, but we were the better team, and in my opinion, we deserved to win.
After the break, PSV accelerated further, turned dominance into goals, and convincingly sealed victory. Such a knack for manipulating rhythm, combined with responding well to tough situations, may be why PSV is so "head and shoulders above the rest," as Bosz describes it.
Challenges ahead
Despite the brilliant moment, Bosz knows this level needs to be maintained if PSV is to continue dominating. The next challenge will come up against FC Twente, and the coach expects to have some of his key players back in the lineup. "I assume Mauro and Rick will be available again. As for Jerdy or Sergiño, it won't take long," he said.
The depth of the squad and the ability to maintain a high standard of play even during consecutive matches will be crucial to PSV's success. Even with a comfortable lead, Bosz warned: "If we don't reach our level, opponents can surprise us.
