Real Madrid faces key fitness concerns ahead of critical Athletic Bilbao clash
Real Madrid is already feeling the intense atmosphere of San Mamés, the stage for this Wednesday's (4th) clash against Athletic Bilbao. After comfortably defeating Getafe, Los Merengues returned to training, but you can't ignore the blend of relief and apprehension hanging over Carlo Ancelotti's squad, especially with the medical department overflowing. Still, the coach has some good news for the match.

The Tchouaméni enigma
Aurélien Tchouaméni remains one of the biggest question marks ahead of the game against Athletic. The French midfielder suffered a sprained left foot during the first half of the Champions League match against Milan on November 5. Since then, he hasn't set foot on the field, missing four games—a stretch that included three wins and one loss for Real Madrid.
Tchouaméni is an important piece for Ancelotti. A natural defensive midfielder, he has been a lifesaver on several occasions for the Italian coach, playing as a makeshift center-back when needed. Without him, Ancelotti has had to lean more on academy players like Raúl Asencio, who's been starting in the wake of Militão's injury.
Though Tchouaméni took part in the latest training, he still remains a doubt for the match. If passed fit to play, he'll be an important figure to help control the tempo of the game and shield the defense. But that would be a risk Ancelotti might not want to take by rushing him back. Keeping this in mind, he may see restricted minutes to regain match fitness.
Bellingham’s calm reassurance
While Tchouaméni’s status is uncertain, Jude Bellingham’s situation is far more clear and optimistic. The English midfielder was subbed off at halftime against Getafe due to a neck strain caused by a knock during the match. However, Bellingham quickly took to social media to reassure fans: “Tests went well, ready for Wednesday. Thanks for the messages.”
Bellingham's presence is a must for Real Madrid. He has been one of the main creative engines of the team, scoring decisive goals with his dazzling plays. Against Athletic Bilbao, that ability to tip the scale in Madrid's favor could be the difference in what promises to be a typically tough battle at San Mamés.
