Real Madrid hang on and collect all three points against Celta Vigo
Real Madrid's MO so far this season, more often than not, has been to hang on and they mustered they stuck to that philosophy in their 2-1 win over Celta Vigo.
It was a bit of a back-and-forth between the two sides. However, it was Celta Vigo who had a couple of chances to open the score. Williot Swedberg had a one-on-one against Thibaut Courtois only for the Swedish forward to pull his shot wide.
Celta Vigo would come to regret that miss as an error trying to play out from the back by Fran Beltran led to a sloppy giveaway, The ball was left to Kylian Mbappe who launched one from outside the area, well out of the reach of Vicente Guaita.
Real Madrid went into the break up by one though not exactly convincing, which, again, has been a pattern early on.
Celta Vigo would find an equalizer in the 51st minute with Swedberg
finding the back of the net.
Swedberg was left all alone with Lucas Vazquez getting caught out. While it ultimately didn't end up costing them, the right-back position, defensively speaking, is going to be something opponents are going to try to exploit going forward.
That lapse in defense was erased as Vinicius Junior gave Madrid the lead once again thanks to an assist from Luka Modric who was brought on in the second half by Carlo Ancelotti. The Croatian slipped the ball past a handful of Celta players to leave the Brazilian alone against the keeper.
Celta Vigo didn't hang their heads and continuted to try to find an equalizer. They came close on a couple of occasions.
The first came via Jonathan Bamba who beat his defender on a bouncing pass but his shot hit the leg of Courtois. The second came during stoppage time on a Celta counter where the ball was laid to an oncoming Anastasios Douvikas . Douvikas lunged only to see his effort go agonizingly wide of the post.
Heartbreak for Celta and a relief to Real Madrid who came away with the win. Again, it wasn't a performance to write home about but they're managing to win despite not playing well.
The win was important as they ran the risk of heading into El Clasico against Real Madrid potentially five points back. But before they can worry about the Catalan side, they face Borussia Dortmund midweek in the Champions League.
