Robert Lewandowski nets a brace as Barcelona humiliate Real Madrid
Barcelona went in to the Santiago Bernabeu and put four past Real Madrid as the Catalan side are now six points ahead of Los Blancos in the standings.
All four goals from Barcelona came in the second half as Barcelona weren't linking up the way Hansi Flick would have wanted.
Real Madrid looked the more dangerous side but Barcelona's offside trap worked wonders. Kylian Mbappe thought he had opened the score midway through the half only for the goal to be called back because of an offside.
To start the second half, Flick made his first change by bringing on Frenkie de Jong in place of Fermin Lopez. With that move, Pedri moved up the pitch to play behind Lewandowski. With the Dutchman, Barcelona got a bit more control and possession when building out the back.
Lewandowski broke the deadlock in the 54th minute following a sublime pass from Marc Casadó with the Polish striker breaking the offside trap. One-on-one with the keeper, Lewandowski decided to shoot from just outside the area, which beat Lunin.
It didn't take long for Lewandowski to double his account as well as Barcelona's lead. Alejandro Balde sent in a precise cross from the left as Lewandowski was completely unmarked. Lewandowski leaped in the air and headed the ball home.
Up by two in a span of two minutes, Barcelona left the home side and their visitors stunned. Barcelona could have put the game to rest soon after but Lewandowski missed a sitter and hit the post. He had another opportunity but skied his shot.
For the Barcelona supporters, the feeling of dread that those misses could back to haunt them was creeping up. Especially with how Real Madrid came back against Borussia Dortmund midweek.
But Lamine Yamal, who had been relatively quiet, opened his account in El Clasico. Raphinha got to the ball before Lucas Vazquez and laid it off to Yamal. The 17-year-old then took on Ferland Mendy and with his weaker foot, shot high past Lunin.
Barcelona all but killed off that game with the third goal but as has been the norm so far this season, they werent' done. Playing with Real Madrid's desperation, Barcelona found plenty of space on the counterattack.
The fourth goal came via a more direct route with Iñigo Martínez sending in a long ball to Raphinha. The Brazilian, continuing his torrid run of form, lifted the ball past Lunin as it went agonizingly slow in to the back of the net.
It was heaven for Barcelona who came in to the Santiago Bernabeu off a 4-1 win over Bayern Munich in the Champions League. Some of the talk heading in was their high line and how it would spell doom given Madrid's pace up front. Hansi Flick didn't change the team's style and Barcelona caught Madrid offside 12 times.
With the win, Barcelona cap off a perfect week and getting past their two toughest tests in flying colors and with style. It also means they're now six points ahead of Real Madrid. If there were any doubts and questions regarding Hansi Flick's side, at least some of those have been answered this past week.
