Sacramento Republic FC could not have begun the 2025 USL Championship season in a more dramatic fashion. In front of a packed-out Heart Health Park, the squad showed resilience, came back from behind against New Mexico United, and won 2-1. But it wasn't just the victory that was impressive, it was how the squad responded, the new head coach, and the young superstars beginning to make their voices heard.

Neill Collins savored his first game in charge that he will not be forgetting anytime soon. His team fell behind early, losing in the first half, but showed character to come back into the game. Russell Cicerone and debutant Lewis Jamieson were the ones who scored the goals that made Sacramento show why they are called Indomitable Club.

The impact of the comeback

If there is one thing about a competitive team, it's being able to perform under pressure. And that's what Republic FC did. New Mexico United broke the scoring in the 21st minute when Greg Hurst found space in the box and blasted it into the net. Goalkeeper Danny Vitiello managed to get a piece of it, but it wasn't enough to hold the ball back.

It was the kind of moment that might have unsettled the team, but Republic FC kept their heads. Their response came on the brink of halftime, when Lewis Jamieson capitalized on a defensive mistake, ran into the box, and was brought down. Clear penalty. Cicerone stepped up, kept his cool, and leveled the score.

The return was completed just at halftime, and once more, Jamieson was the star of the show. The Scottish forward, in his club debut, pounced on a rebound off the post and slid it into the goal, joining an exclusive list of 18 players to score in their Republic FC debut. Not a bad debut, however.

A strong defense and a rising star

New Mexico United pushed for the equalizer and came closest in the 70th minute, when Hurst almost scored for a second time from a close-range header on a corner kick. The ball sailed just inches across the post, as Sacramento remained stubborn, managed the game wonderfully, and timed the win.

Aside from the comeback, the other notable highlight was Blake Willey, a name that Republic FC fans need to begin remembering. Only 17 years of age, he became the second-youngest player in the club's history to make a season opener's starting lineup. And not only did he join in but excel. Four completed tackles and five duels won out of seven fought for. For a budding talent breaking onto the pro level, it was a good debut performance.

What to expect from Republic FC this season?

The opener gave us plenty of good omens. To begin with, the team's fighting spirit. Down early, Sacramento kept their cool and fought their way back into the game without losing hope. That is a clear indication that Collins is already instilling the team with a winning mentality.

Of course, predictions are too soon, but that first impression carried weight. Toughness was showed by the team, bigs came through, and most significant of all, they started with three points. If they are able to ride the momentum throughout, Sacramento may be in store for something remarkable in 2025.

It was exactly the way it should have been, the first step, gritty, determined, and victorious, especially for a squad that wears with pride the Indomitable tag.
