Leeds have won each of their last three meetings with Sheffield Wednesday, all without conceding, seeking a fourth successive victory over their Yorkshire rivals for the first time in a quarter of a century.

Sheffield Wednesday vs Leeds preview

Leeds United have made a mixed start to their Premier League return, so will they avoid an EFL Cup upset? On the opening weekend, the White re-announced themselves in the top division in dramatic fashion, beating Everton 1-0 at a raucous Elland Road, with debutant Lukas Nmecha converting a penalty just six minutes from time. However, on Saturday, Daniel Farke's side were brought back down to earth, demolishing 5-0 by Arsenal in North London, simply steamrollered by the Gunners.

Farke himself stated that games such as that will not define their season, but he'll be hoping their confidence has not been shattered, prior to Newcastle's visit to West Yorkshire on Saturday. Before then, will Leeds make progress in the EFL Cup, something they've struggled to do in recent times? The Whites won this competition in 1968, also reaching the 1996 final, but, more recently, have crashed out in either round one or two in seven of the last 11 seasons, including both of the last two.

As for Sheffield Wednesday, this is a fantastic chance for them to be in the spotlight. Long story short, owner Dejphon Chansiri is running the club into the ground, actively looking to sell, but at a prohibitively, unrealistically high asking price. As a result, throughout the summer, players and other members of staff were not having salaries paid, leading to a mass exodus of key figures, including manager Danny Röhl, with Henrik Pedersen taking on the impossible job.

On the pitch, the Owls lost their first two Championship fixtures against Stoke and Leicester, but did get off the mark on Saturday, fighting back from 2-0 down to earn a draw with Wrexham; Barry Bannan and then Bailey Cadamarteri the scorers at the Racecourse Ground. In this competition, the Owls did oust Bolton Wanderers on penalties in the previous round, but many supporters will boycott this Yorkshire derby on Tuesday, protesting against the ownership, so an eerily empty Hillsborough awaits, but can Wednesday upset the odds an eliminate Premier League Leeds?

Leeds team news

Having made just one enforced change at the weekend, captain Ethan Ampadu missing out against Arsenal due to injury, it'll be interesting to see how much Daniel Farke rotates for this tie.

In terms of goalkeepers, new signing Lucas Perri has started both Premier League matches, with Karl Darlow on the bench, while last year's number one Illan Meslier has been nowhere to be seen.

There could be debuts for centre-backs Sebastiaan Bornauw and Jaka Bijol, both of whom were unused substitutes on Saturday, while fellow summer arrivals Sean Longstaff and Noah Okafor could both start in Leeds colours for the first time. Dominic Calvert-Lewin is yet to feature in a matchday squad, so will he be involved, in the city of his birth no less, for the first time?

Leeds United predicted lineup vs Sheffield Wednesday: (4-2-3-1): Darlow; Byram, Bijol, Bornauw, Gudmundsson; Gruev, Longstaff, Aaronson, Harrison, Okafor; Nmecha.

Leeds player to watch vs Sheffield Wednesday

Lukas Nmecha has scored Leeds' only goal of the season to date, doing so off the bench against Everton, so as he seeks to stake a claim to be first-choice up front, will he be on target here?

Sheffield Wednesday vs Leeds prediction

As already alluded to, it's going to be a tense, weird atmosphere at Hillsborough on Tuesday but, on the pitch, Leeds' quality will surely see them progress: Sheffield Wednesday 0-3 Leeds United.
