The USMNT wrapped up the October international window with a result that truly mattered. The 2–1 comeback win over the Australia men’s national soccer team at DICK’S Sporting Goods Park, in front of more than 18,000 fans, showed a team that no longer falls apart after conceding. It was the third straight match without a loss against World Cup bound nations and, more than that, a test passed in situations where the American side used to stumble not long ago. Australia took the lead in the 19th minute, but two goals from Haji Wright and two assists from Cristian Roldan turned the game around.
Measured reaction
The early moments belonged to the USMNT. The ball moved steadily between McKenzie, Richards, and Robinson as they looked for openings against a compact Australian back line. Even with control of possession, the first goal went the other way. In the 19th minute, Jordan Bos pounced on a loose ball inside the box and fired a left-footed shot to make it 1–0.
The goal didn’t shake the Americans. Wright and Weah started finding gaps, forcing goalkeeper Matthew Ryan into action. Soon after, McKennie picked out Roldan, who sent in a low cross for Wright to finish with his first touch, placing the ball perfectly inside the far post.
Composure in the comeback
After the break, Australia came out pressing and tested Freese with shots from Metcalfe and O’Neill, but the game shifted on a set piece. Following a foul near the sideline, Roldan took a quick free kick and found Wright. The forward controlled, cut past his defender, and curled the ball home for his second of the night.
Pochettino used the lead to rotate his squad. Balogun, Aaronson, and Tessmann came in to refresh the midfield, while Morris and Arfsten added balance in defense. Despite the substitutions, the team maintained control without sitting too deep. Australia pushed in the final minutes, but Freese preserved the score with a crucial save on Irankunda’s close-range effort.
In stoppage time, Luna had two more chances, both set up by Aaronson. Neither found the net, but they showed the team’s intent to keep attacking until the end. The final whistle confirmed a solid performance and another win against a strong opponent.
