Brentford are unbeaten in five meetings with Sunderland, dating back to 1988, with the Bees targeting a third successive victory on Wearside, despite having been winless in six visits to the North East beforehand.

Sunderland vs Brentford preview

Both have made mixed starts to their respective campaigns, so who will go into the international break on a high? Sunderland announced their return to the top division in some style, demolishing West Ham 3-0 on the opening weekend, but have since been brought back down to earth.

Last weekend, Régis Le Bris' side were beaten 2-0 by fellow newly-promoted outfit Burnley, both goals coming in the second half at Turf Moor, the visitors mustering just a solitary shot on target all afternoon. Then, on Tuesday night, an admittedly much changed Black Cats side were dumped out of the Carabao Cup. Welcoming third-tier Huddersfield Town to Wearside, they needed a late equaliser from Marc Guiu to salvage a 1-1 draw. However, in the subsequent penalty shootout, 11 of the 12 spot-kicks were scored, with Milan Aleksić the only man who failed to convert, meaning they've now lost each of their last five EFL Cup ties, dating back to when they were a League One club. So now, can Sunderland get back to winning ways in the Premier League?

As for Brentford, well the complete opposite trajectory. When the Bees were swatted aide by Nottingham Forest on the opening weekend, 3-0 down by half time, those of us who tipped them for relegation were feeling rather smug. Thus, it was crucial for rookie manager Keith Andrews to get off to a positive start in last weekend's home opener, and his team did just that.

A mere 12 minutes into his debut, Dango Ouattara scored, what turned out to be, the only goal of the afternoon as the Bees beat Aston Villa 1-0 in West London. Then, in mid-week, Andrews' side enjoyed a noteworthy EFL Cup victory, dumping out Bournemouth 2-0 at Dean Court, with last season's two forgotten men Fábio Carvalho and Igor Thiago on target either side of half time. So, can the Bees cap off a perfect week with a third successive victory when they visit the Stadium of Light on Saturday?

Sunderland team news

As alluded to, Régis Le Bris heavily rotated in the League Cup on Tuesday, so will revert, for the most part, back to the lineup deployed at Turf Moor. However, he is short of centre-back options, after Dan Ballard hobbled off against Burnley, while Luke O'Nien and Aji Alese are already sidelined.

Summer signings Nordi Mukiele and Arthur Masuaku started as the centre-back partnership against Huddersfield, but both are full-backs, so Jenson Seelt and Omar Alderete appear the obvious pair.

Sunderland predicted lineup vs Brentford: (4-3-3): Roefs; Hume, Seelt, Alderete, Reinildo; Xhaka, Diarra, Sadiki; Talbi, Adingra, Mayenda.

Sunderland player to watch vs Brentford

Eliezer Mayenda was on target during the hammering of West Ham, having netted ten times in the Championship last season, so will he be the Black Cats' main goal threat once again?

Brentford team news

Keith Andrews made nine changes at Bournemouth on Tuesday, Sepp van den Berg and Kevin Schade the duo to keep their places, thereby facing some welcome selection dilemmas. Yoane Wissa remains unavailable, seeking to force through a move, so Igor Thiago will once again lead the line.

Elsewhere, Jordan Henderson will be hoping to return to midfield, having made his full-debut last weekend, facing the club he joined as an eight year old.

Brentford predicted lineup vs Sunderland: (4-3-3): Kelleher; Kayode, Collins, van den Berg, Lewis-Potter; Henderson, Yarmolyuk, Ouattara, Damsgaard, Schade; Thiago.

Brentford player to watch vs Sunderland

Dango Ouattara's arrival has seemingly transformed Brentford's attack, scoring on his debut last weekend, so could the Burkina Faso international be the difference on Wearside?

Sunderland vs Brentford prediction

This clash is so tough to call, but we're backing recently resurgent Brentford for victory at the Stadium of Light, although it'll be close, with goals guaranteed: Sunderland 2-1 Brentford.
