It looked like Tottenham would win yet another trophy in their trophy cabinet after managing a two-goal lead against PSG in the UEFA Super Cup final. However, the Champions League winners needed just five minutes before extra time in regulation time to level the scores and come from behind in the penalty shoot-out to claim another title in an unforgettable 2025 for the French.

Under Thomas Frank, Tottenham even tried to emulate PSG's initial strategy by starting the game by playing the ball near the back to keep the pressure on, and this almost paid off after a mistake on the break led to a shot from outside the box by Pedro Perro. PSG, meanwhile, had a very slow start to the game, with acceleration only coming from Barcola.

But it was from a free-kick that Tottenham managed to open the scoring before the break, when Vicario took a free-kick near the middle and Romero deflected it into the middle of the box. In his attempt to cut the ball back, defender Marquinhos hit the ball at van de Ven, and debutant Palinha took the opportunity to hit it hard, only for it to be deflected by Chevalier. On the rebound, van de Ven scored for Spurs.

In their first game since the final of the Club World Cup, PSG continued to fail to clear the ball and Richarlison also had a chance to score, but his shot went wide. Chevalier was improving as the match wore on, gaining more confidence, but he ended up failing decisively on Spurs' second goal, when the defender failed to keep up with Romero, and his saved header ended up going into the net.

PSG were looking defeated after going two goals down, but Tottenham's failure to set up a win against the best team in the world ended up costing them dear. In a very collective move in the 79th minute, Lee Kang-in received Vitinha's ball and hit a cross from the edge of the box to level the score. And in stoppage time, Hakimi opened up with Dembélé on the right to send in a strong cross that Gonçalo Ramos could head in.

Vitinha started the penalty shoot-out by missing his shot and Tottenham took the lead, but Chevalier recovered and saved van de Ven's shot. PSG then went ahead thanks to Tel's miskick, allowing Nuno Mendes to hit the decisive penalty to give PSG the title. Tottenham were able to show their qualities and will certainly be stronger in the 2024/25 Premier League, but the fact that they lost the title the way they did will leave their fans with negative feelings.
