What happened at Tottenham Hotspur last season?

Last time round, Tottenham Hotspur endured one of the most peculiar and unique seasons any club has ever enjoyed in any league anywhere in the world. In the Premier League, Ange Postecoglou's side finished 17th, just above the relegation zone, suffering 22 defeats, Spurs' highest tally in a single league campaign since being relegated 90 years ago. From 26 February onwards, they lost nine of 12 league fixtures, their sole victory coming at home against rock-bottom Southampton.

However, all of that was forgotten because, on a famous May night in Bilbao, Tottenham beat Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League Final; Brennan Johnson bundling the ball home from close-range on the cusp of half time at San Mamés. So, despite their horrendous league finish, Spurs are back in the Champions League and, more importantly to supporters at least, their trophy hoodoo is over, capturing major silverware for the first time since February 2008.

At the parade, Postecoglou declared that "season three is always better than season two", before later conceding that "they often kill off the main character", and that's exactly what happened, with the Aussie sacked in early-June, departing as a beloved club legend, one that'll be tough to follow.

How will Tottenham Hotspur do this season?

The man tasked with replacing Postecoglou is Thomas Frank, taking over after seven seasons as Brentford boss. Well, his first game in charge actually came on Wednesday night, facing European champions Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup at Stadio Friuli. With 80 minutes on the clock, Spurs were cruising, 2-0 up in Udine, thanks to set piece goals from Micky van de Ven and then Cristian Romero either side of half time, Guglielmo Vicario hardly having had a save to make.

The match was petering out until PSG halved the deficit with five minutes to go, at which point panic set in, before les Parisiens inevitably equalised in the 94th minute, forcing a shootout. PSG actually missed their first penalty, with Spurs scoring their first two, but then van de Ben and Mathys Tel both failed to convert from 12 yards, as Tottenham saw the Super Cup slip from their grasp.

In terms of the Premier League, Spurs can surely only improve on last season's 17th place finish because, well, if they don't, they'll be relegated! Balancing domestic and Champions League commitments certainly will not be easy, so Frank may be hoping to bolster his squad further.

Mohammed Kudus and João Palhinha are the two most noteworthy additions, while Son Heung-min has been sold to LAFC, departing after a decade at Spurs, during which time he made 453 appearances, scoring 173 goals, a tally only bettered by Harry Kane, Jimmy Greaves, Bobby Smith and Martin Chivers. Kudus though isn't a bad replacement, although Frank can't count on James Maddison, after he suffered an ACL rupture during a pre-season friendly in Seoul, which is a blow.

In summary, Frank appears to be a shrewd appointment, and we're forecasting that Tottenham will be very strong this season, certainly in the race for Champions League qualification, even if their supporters would probably rather win a domestic cup, having got a taste for silverware.
