Tunisia have won all five previous meetings with Uganda, scoring 16 goals and conceding only one, albeit only one of these have come this century.

Of all 44 nations the Eagles of Carthage have faced five or more times, they only boast a perfect record against Rwanda, the United Arab Emirates and Uganda.

Tunisia vs Uganda preview

Tunisia's sole Africa Cup of Nations triumph came as hosts in 2004, but now, across North Africa, how far can they go? Impressively, the Eagles of Carthage have now qualified for 17 successive editions of AFCON, but they've only gone beyond the quarter-finals once since hoisting the trophy aloft over two decades ago. This was when the tournament was last hosted in North Africa, dumped out in the semi-finals by Senegal in Cairo in 2019. At last year's edition, Tunisia catastrophically crashed out in the group stages winless, ignominiously beaten by Namibia, expected to much better this time round.

Since then, Sami Trabelsi's side have booked their place at a third successive World Cup, not so much as conceding a single goal across ten qualifiers, winning nine of them. The Eagles of Carthage will face a European play-off winner, Japan and Netherlands stateside next summer, seeking to go beyond the World Cup group stages for the very first time. Before then, Tunisia are under pressure to make a deep run at AFCON, so will they pick up three points in their opener in Rabāṭ?

As for Uganda, they are back at the Cup of Nations for the first time since 2019, having missed the previous two editions, set to make their eighth appearance overall. The Cranes won four of their six qualifiers, finishing above Congo and South Sudan, notably holding South Africa to a 2-2 draw in Johannesburg, subsequently finishing second in their World Cup qualification section too.

So now, the Red Devils are seeking a rare AFCON win. Since reaching the final of this competition in 1978, Uganda have won only once at the tournament, beating DR Congo in Cairo six years ago, and Paul Put's team are expected to be up against it in Group C. Thus, a victory for Tunisia, and probably a clean sheet too, is expected by most at Stade Olympique de Rabat on Tuesday night.

These include Sheffield Wednesday's Yan Valery and Hannibal Mejbri of Burnley, while Sebastian Tounekti of Celtic will be looking to add to his five international caps.

Midfielder Ferjani Sassi will earn his 99th cap, only Youssef Msakni (104) and Radhi Jaïdi (105) have won more.

Tunisia predicted lineup vs Uganda: (4-3-3): Dahmen; Valery, Talbi, Meriah, Maâloul; Sassi, Ben Romdhane, Hannibal; Sliti, Tounekti, Jaziri.

Tunisia player to watch vs Uganda

Naïm Sliti is the top-scorer in the squad with 16 international goals, on target at both the 2017 and 2019 Cup of Nations, so can he add to his tally?

Uganda team news

Paul Put's squad contains players from across the globe, including Hibernian defender Jordan Obita and St Johnstone striker Uche Ikpeazu, who only made his international debut in September.

Another English-born squad member is Toby Sibbick of Burton, while other squad members ply their trade in Czechia, Ethiopia, Romania, USA, Tanzania, Thailand and other far-flung destinations.

Should goalkeeper Denis Onyango feature, he'd become only the fourth man in their 40s to play at an Africa Cup of Nations.

Uganda predicted lineup vs Tunisia: (4-5-1): Onyango; Sibbick, Kayondo, Awany, Obita; Aucho, Semakula, Byaruhanga, Mato, Mutyaba; Ikpeazu.

Uganda player to watch vs Tunisia

Rogers Mato is the highest-scorer in the Uganda squad with six international goals, including a brace against Mozambique in September, so can he help them upset the odds here?

Tunisia vs Uganda prediction

Tunisia are likely to be simply too strong for Uganda in Rabāṭ on Tuesday, likely to win to nil because that's just what they do, hoping this is the start of an elongated run: Tunisia 2-0 Uganda.
