These two nations have only ever met on three occasions to date, producing one win apiece and a draw, all in friendlies. Their most recent clash came on the outskirts of Johannesburg just a week before the 2010 World Cup, with the U.S. winning 3-1; Edson Buddle bagging a brace and then Herculez Gomez sealing the win, after Tim Cahill had struck for the Socceroos.

Are the United States, belatedly, showing encouraging signs ahead of co-hosting the World Cup next summer? On Friday night, Folarin Balogun's late equaliser saw the U.S. hold Ecuador to a 1-1 draw in Austin. This may not leap off the page, but many are hailing this as their most complete performance under Mauricio Pochettino given that, since taking over last year, he's endured, at best, mixed results.

Last month, USA lost 2-0 to Korea Republic in New Jersey, but then beat Japan 2-0 in Columbus, so are now seeking to build some momentum ahead of their World Cup opener at SoFi Stadium on 12 June. Next month, the Stars and Stripes will face Paraguay in Pennsylvania and then Uruguay in Florida, all of whom have qualified for next summer's tournament, so they will be good tests for USA, but they have to feel as though this clash at Dick's Sporting Goods Park is winnable.

Having said that, visitors Australia travel to Colorado having now won all seven matches they've played in 2025, looking to maintain this perfect record. On Friday, the Socceroos beat Canada 1-0 in Montréal, with teenager Nestory Irankunda the only scorer at Stade Saputo, rather tackling the ball into the back of the net.

Before this, Tony Popovic's side had concluded World Cup qualification with four straight wins, most notably beating Japan 1-0 in Perth and then Saudi Arabia 2-1 in Jeddah. Australia then also beat neighbours New Zealand home and away to claim the Soccer Ashes in September, so will arrive in Denver full of confidence. Come Tuesday night, will the Socceroos win again, or can USA make home advantage count as they return to Commerce City for the first time since 2017?

United States team news

Mauricio Pochettino is without Sergiño Dest, Joe Scally, Tyler Adams, Gio Reyna, Yunus Musah, Alejandro Zendejas and Ricardo Pepi, while talisman Christian Pulisic was only fit enough to feature off the bench on Friday, so could miss out from the start again.

In a surprise move, Miles Robinson was deployed at right-back against Australia, chosen over Alex Freeman, while Max Arfsten continues to deputise for Antonee Robinson on the other side.

Tanner Tessmann and Aidan Morris got the nod in midfield in Austin, with Weston McKennie pushed further forward, while Tim Weah's USMNT form has to be a concern, so will he get another chance to show what he can do?

United States predicted lineup vs Australia: (4-3-3): Freese; Freeman, Richards, Ream, Arfsten; Sands, Tessmann, McKennie; Weah, Tillman, Balogun.

If Pulisic is not good to go again, Malik Tillman will be tasked with being the US' primary chance creator. The Bayer Leverkusen man scored against both Trinidad & Tobago and then Haiti during the Gold Cup, but will now get the opportunity to stake a claim for more importance here.

Australia team news

Tony Popovic is still searching for his number one, with Paul Izzo donning the gloves in Montréal, after Joe Gauci had started five of the qualifiers, while Mat Ryan, who has 100 caps to his name, is also still in the squad.

Out-field, the Socceroos play a rather conservative 5-4-1, with youngster Mohamed Touré likely to lead the line again, while Friday's match-winner Nestory Irankunda could keep his place too.

Australia predicted lineup vs United States: (4-3-3): Gauci; Miller, Degenek, Circati, Burgess, Bos; O'Neill, Yazbek, Boyle, Irankunda; Touré.

Martin Boyle now has ten Socceroos goals to his name, on target during qualifiers against Palestine and Indonesia, and his pace is key to Australia's counter-attacking style.

United States vs Australia prediction

This clash at Dick's Sporting Goods Park between two well-matched team could go either-way, so a draw seems the most-likely outcome in Colorado on Tuesday night: United States 1-1 Australia.
