USMNT started the 2025 Gold Cup on the right note with a dominating win. The 5-0 thrashing of Trinidad and Tobago at PayPal Park not only served to lay down the tone for the tournament but also ended a four-game losing streak that had been demoralizing the team internally. With the goals of Malik Tillman, exceptional performances from Diego Luna, and a collectively involved unit as a whole, the team delivered when it was most necessary.

Tillman hits twice and steals the show

The game's star was Malik Tillman. The PSV Eindhoven attacking midfielder was responsible for both team goals, both within the first half. He broke the deadlock in the 16th minute after being given the pass from Jack McGlynn on the left wing and scored with his right foot. He then grabbed his second in the 41st minute off a pass from Diego Luna after he had gained ball control in the final third and shot from close range.

Diego Luna impresses with his energy and hustle

Along with tallying two assists, Diego Luna was among the most active players on the field. As much as his new handlebar 'stache captured headlines on social media and in the stands, what he produced on the field was what truly left a mark.

The first assist came on Tillman's second goal, following pressure in the visitors' third. The second on the play that created the USMNT's third, again in the first half. All done on a day when most of the buzz revolved around Christian Pulisic's being absent and in stepped Luna. By game's end, it became clear that the team had another dependable asset within its creative mettle.

Luna had an excellent transition and demonstrated that he could be an asset for the rest of the tournament.

Upcoming match and group opportunities

They welcome Saudi Arabia to Austin, Texas, next Thursday and should expect a sold-out stadium and good vibes to play for. The seven-time Gold Cup championship USMNT seeks number eight, and another encouraging result would all but guarantee early qualification into the knockout stage.

Mauricio Pochettino will probably keep his main lineup and make minimal changes, if any at all. The first match provides him with some room to try out a few things without excessive pressure, and it allows the team to adapt to competition progressively.
