Aston Villa are seeking three successive victories over Burnley for the first time since 1907; the Clarets have won only four of 32 visits to Villa Park since 1950, their most-recent victory in Birmingham coming a decade ago when Danny Ings was the only scorer.

Aston Villa vs Burnley preview

After an underwhelming start to this season, Aston Villa are starting to build some momentum. Last Sunday, the Claret and Blue Army claimed their first Premier League win of the season, fighting back from a goal down to beat Fulham 3-1 at home. Ollie Watkins with a confidence-boosting equaliser, before John McGinn and Emi Buendía struck in quick succession soon after the interval to make the points secure. Before this, the Villans had failed to score in their first four league games, not winning any of the first five, but those three points certainly improved the mood.

As has the fact that Unai Emery's team have made a perfect start to their Europa League campaign. After battling to a 1-0 win over Bologna, Villa beat Feyenoord 2-0 at De Kuip on Thursday. Second half strikes from that duo again, namely Buendía and McGinn, saw them collect three precious points in Rotterdam. So now, can they claim a fourth successive victory in this claret clash on Sunday?

As for Burnley, most predicted that they'd finish rock-bottom of the table before a ball was kicked, but have been surprisingly competitive. Last Saturday, Scott Parker's team suffered their first real pummelling of the campaign, demolished 5-1 by Manchester City. Having said that, the score was 1-1 at the hour mark, Jaidon Anthony having equalised, while Maxime Estève wrote his name into the Premier League history books, becoming the sixth player to score two own goals in a match.

Before this though, the Clarets had proved they'll be no push-overs, only beaten by both Manchester United and Liverpool courtesy of stoppage time penalties. The fixture list could certainly have been kinder to Burnley, who kick off in the relegation zone, having beaten only Sunderland so far, losing all three away games, conceding 11 goals, a trend we're expecting to continue at Villa Park.

Aston Villa team news

On Thursday night, Emi Martínez was due to start in goal against Feyenoord, but suffered an injury during the warm up, hence why Marco Bizot ultimately donned the gloves in Rotterdam, so will the Argentine World Cup winner recover in time for this one?

Elsewhere, his namesake and compatriot Emi Buendía, very much the forgotten man, will keep his place in attack, after scoring during both victories already this week.

Unai Emery is still very short in terms of midfield options, with Youri Tielemans and Amadou Onana sidelined, but Lucas Digne will return at left-back, after Ian Maatsen was rotated into the team for the Europa League. Pau Torres will continue to deputise for the injured Tyrone Mings at the back.

Aston Villa predicted lineup vs Burnley: (4-2-3-1): Martínez; Cash, Konsa, Torres, Digne; Kamara, McGinn, Guessand, Rogers, Buendía; Watkins.

Ollie Watkins opened his account for the season last Sunday, while he's previously netted twice at Turf Moor, so can he score against Burnley at Villa Park for the first time?

In complete contrast to his opposite number, Scott Parker has had over a week to prepare for this one, so can he come up with a tactical masterplan?

For games against top sides, Parker has deployed an ultra-defensive back five, so it'll be interesting to see if he does so here, because that'll tell us how he views Aston Villa.

Despite the fact Lesley Ugochukwu was back from suspension, Florentino Luís kept his place at the base of midfield against Manchester City, set to partner Josh Cullen once again.

Burnley predicted lineup vs Aston Villa: (5-4-1): Dúbravka; Walker, Ekdal, Estève, Laurent, Hartman; Cullen, Florentino Luís, Tchaouna, Anthony; Foster.

Jaidon Anthony has already scored four goals in six Premier League appearances this season, on target at Old Trafford and the Etihad, so can he add Villa Park to his growing list?

Aston Villa vs Burnley prediction

With four Premier League matches taking place simultaneously on Sunday, if you want goals, this probably isn't the match you should choose! It is unlikely to be a high-scoring thriller, but we are backing Aston Villa to claim a hard-fought victory in the claret clash: Aston Villa 1-0 Burnley.
