Belgium are unbeaten in five meetings with Wales, but the Red Devils are winless in three visits to Cardiff, beaten there 1-0 in Euro 2016 qualifying, with both subsequent encounters finishing 1-1. The Dragons also famously won 3-1 at Euro 2016 in the quarter-finals at Stade Pierre-Mauroy.

Wales vs Belgium preview

With three matches to go, neither of these two nations are actually top of Group J, but first place is very much up for grabs, so will either claim three priceless point at a raucous Cardiff City Stadium?

When last they were in World Cup qualifying action, Wales battled to a 1-0 victory over Kazakhstan, with Kieffer Moore bundling home the night's only goal in Astana. This means Craig Bellamy's team have accumulated ten points from five fixtures to date, winning both at home, while their sole competitive defeat under him came in June, losing a 4-3 thrilling in Brussels, conceding late on.

The Dragons' last two outings have both been friendlies, both resulting in defeats, first beaten 1-0 by Canada in Swansea last month. Then, on Thursday night, with 7,000 members of the Red Wall having made the journey east, Wales were demolished by England at Wembley, 3-0 down inside 20 minutes, thankful the scoring stopped there. Nevertheless, no Wales supporter will care one bit about that if their team qualifiers for a second successive World Cup, and the outcome of this huge Monday night clash in Cardiff could go along way to determining their fate, as well as that of others.

Belgium meantime are the top seeds and red-hot favourites to secure first place in Group J, but have so far been far from impenetrable. Having already drawn 1-1 in Skopje in June, Rudi Garcia's side dropped points against North Macedonia again on Friday, the game in Ghent finishing goalless, despite the fact the hosts mustered 25 shots to the Lynxes' three. Belgium enjoyed back-to-back 6-0 victories in September, smashing Liechtenstein in Vaduz and then Kazakhstan at Stade Constant Vanden Stock, but still have work to do if they're to secure automatic qualification.

So, as it stands, North Macedonia have 12 points, having played a game more than the chasing pack, Belgium are on 11 and Wales have ten. Both the Red Devils and the Dragons know that three wins out of three from their remaining fixtures would guarantee World Cup qualification. Considering Belgium's last two matches are against Kazakhstan in Astana and Liechtenstein in Liège, this is certainly their toughest remaining test, underlining the importance of a victory. Thus, World Cup qualifiers do not come much more important than this, so who will prevail at the Cardiff City Stadium?

Out-field, Rangers midfielder Nicolas Raskin has become a key figure in recent matches, while Amadou Onana could return to add some more defensive solidity to midfield. 36 year old Axel Witsel is back in the squad, hoping to feature for the first time since June 2024 against Luxembourg.

In attack, in the absence of Lukaku and Charles De Ketelaere, Arsenal's Leandro Trossard led the line against North Macedonia, chosen over Loïs Openda and Michy Batshuayi. Alongside, Manchester City's Jérémy Doku is a guaranteed starter on one flank while, having opened his international account in Vaduz last month, Malick Fofana could return to the lineup.
