What Liverpool lost and what Crystal Palace risked after Guehi’s transfer collapse

The failed £35m move left Arne Slot without a key defender and Palace with a player who knows how close he was to Anfield

Marc Guehi was almost transferred from Crystal Palace to Liverpool so was so close. Medicals were conducted, a £35 million transfer was agreed, and he even filmed a goodbye video. However, just when it was all going to go through, the move collapsed. Palace called off the deal because they were unable to sign their target replacement, Brazilian defender Igor Julio, who instead ended up at West Ham. Now that the European transfer window has since shut down, Guehi will stay at Selhurst Park and be part of the regular roster.

The non-deal

Liverpool had viewed Guehi as an immediate solution to their defense. His profile was ideal: young, reliable, and already acclimated to the Premier League's swift pace. Palace would not trade away a starting lineup defender without a sure backup. The attempt to sign Igor Julio fell through, leaving them with no choice but to pull out. The transfer highlights how, in English football, even advanced negotiations may break down in a matter of hours.

All of which must have come as a shock to Guehi. He was about to begin a new chapter at Anfield, before being suddenly robbed of the opportunity. Then he took on Aston Villa, scored one of the goals, and showed exactly why he's so greatly admired. In one sense, it was a personal rebuff to anyone who questioned his dedication, and a reminder to Palace of how crucial he continues to be on the field.

What it implies for Liverpool and Palace

The event leaves the two teams with very different issues. Liverpool lost valuable time on a transaction that was thought to be complete and will now have to wait until the next one to strengthen their defense. Same Slot is tied down with what he already is. Palace, on the other hand, kept their defensive captain but put themselves in a vulnerable position. Guehi knows that he was inches away from taking a massive career leap and might have some anger. The board will need to manage this tactfully so as not to have tension.

Finally, keeping Guehi makes Palace stronger short term but his future is not yet mapped out. If he keeps performing at this level, there will be fresh approaches. The failed transfer is a reminder that in the market, nothing is written in stone until the ink has dried.
