This summer has definitely been one to remember for the United States Men’s National team. Despite the ups and downs, the USMNT has punched their ticket to the Gold Cup final this Sunday against rivals Mexico. In the year before the World Cup, what would a victory mean to the Americans?

This weekend's contest is noteworthy for many reasons, the least of which is the heated rivalry between the USA and Mexico. The two teams have faced off with one another 78 previous times, with the Mexicans having the advantage, coming out victorious 37 times. While the all time matchup favors Mexico, the United States has had the better of their recent encounters. Americans will remember the back to back wins in the CONCACAF Nations league as well as Miles Robinson giving the U.S. a 1-0 win in the 2021 Gold Cup final.
This summer has also been notably for activities off the pitch as well. Star Christian Pulisic made headlines when he opted not to play in the friendlies and Gold Cup matches, deciding to rest instead. The decision was ridiculed by former USMNT star Landon Donovan, who says that the decision “pissed him off”.

Pulisic’s absence paired with other players such as Weston McKennie and Timothy Weah being unable to play has meant that other players have gotten a chance to play more minutes. One such player is Diego Luna, who has taken full advantage. While many people have called this team a “B team”, they have still made the Gold Cup final, and are one win away from the country’s 8th Gold Cup title.

A victory would be more than just the 9th title in the country’s history. It would be a sign of progress and a beacon of hope in the most important time in this young soccer nation. With the 2026 World Cup looming on home soil, the United States are in need of a reason to believe.
