4. Is This Really Happening?, 2009 Confederations Cup Final vs. Brazil

For one half of soccer, USA was on top of the world, and that’s hardly an exaggeration. After beating recently crowned European champions Spain in the semifinals, America took on the Brazilians, then ranked 5th in the world. And none of this even mentions the miracle it took for USA to advance out of the qualifying rounds.

However, America not only hung with Brazil, but struck first thanks to a Dempsey goal within the first 10 minutes. In the 27th minute, America put the soccer world into a state of shock. After a misplaced pass by Brazil, Donovan and forward Charlie Davies burst forward. After a perfectly weighted ball by Donovan, Davies returned the favor with a gorgeous pass of his own. With work still to be done, Donovan’s first touch was masterful, setting him up for the shot that put USA up 2-0.
