Seattle Sounders Expecting 45,000 Fans for Sunday’s MLS Playoffs Game

The Seattle Sounders have set attendance records in five or their first six years in MLS. At one point they even held the record for most fans to watch a sporting event at CenturyLink Field. The Sounders are continually in the top 20 to 25 in the world when it comes to attendance. So it shouldn’t be any surprise that club is expecting attendance to be in the 45,000s or higher.

I would almost personally guarantee that that number might even reach 50,000-55,000 by the time it is all said and done. The other local professional team, the Seattle Seahawks, play Thursday night on the road. I know quite a few people that are fans and ticket holders of both teams, like me. Without the Seahawks competing for air time with the Sounders, it should get a lot of rear-ends in the seats.

According to Don Ruiz of the Tacoma News Tribune, the Sounders have reached mid-40,000s and that the club will make seats available according to demand, which they say, is strong. I love it when I read these things. It makes me proud that we are able to put that many in the seats.

All you other supporters out there hold on one minute. I already know what you are going to say. You are going to accuse the Sounders fan base of being “plastic” or as the Timbers Army likes to call us, “Groupon Bandits”.

My first question to you is what is so wrong with the club selling tickets on Groupon?

Nothing, nothing at all. It helps get butts in the seats doesn’t it? It also helps people who may not have the opportunity to attend a match to finally make it to one. Yes, I am sure that a lot of the supporters/fans of the Sounders were not around prior to 2009. Hell, I wasn’t and I am not going to lie about it.

Just because I wasn’t around prior to them entering MLS, doesn’t make me less of a supporter/fan does it? Let me answer that for you, NO!

I digress. This is great for the Seattle Sounders and the league. These conference finals have been great when you look at the attendance numbers as well as the quality of play on the field. The Sounders supporters are showing the league and the rest of the world what they are capable of doing and I am damn proud to be a part of it.

Keep in mind that the Seattle Sounders are 12-1-3 when playing MLS teams before a home crowd above 40,000. Also try not to forget that all clubs envy Seattle.
