Paraguay ST Derlis Gonzalez, FC Basel (21)

I could have went with someone like Cardona or Reyna here, but I decided to give Derlis Gonzalez the nod for his work at Basel, which included two strong performances in both of the team’s group stage losses to Real Madrid in the Champions League. After scoring the team’s lone goal in a 5-1 September thrashing after popping up for several chances, he was a threat in the team’s 1-0 loss to Real in November, creating chances and imposing himself as a threat.

Gonzalez is able to play as a striker or a wide attacker on the right, and it will be interesting to see how he is deployed by manager Ramon Diaz. He has the pace and dribbling ability to threaten defenses, and we’ll see if he can become a star for his national team. Paraguay could use Gonzalez’s speed, and his movement can cause plenty of headaches for a defense, whether he plays out wide or as a second striker. He’s very right-footed, so that is something to keep in mind.
