7. Midfield steel

Tottenham has its fair share of fancy attacking players, but they also have some real physicality in the middle of the park. The combination of Mousa Dembele and Eric Dier provide Spurs with some serious steel in the midfield.

Think about it, if you were in a dark alley, would you want to see either of those men coming towards you? I certainly wouldn’t. I could think of a lot of other Premier League midfields I’d want to tangle with before I ever considered selecting Dier and Dembele.

More from Premier League

Dier, the converted centre-back, isn’t afraid to challenge anyone. Despite his youth and lack of experience playing the position, he’s turned into a terrific shield for the back four all season long. His terrific form is a big reason that Tottenham’s defense has been so stingy this season.

If there was an award for the most improved player in the Premier League, Mousa Dembele would deserve to win it. He’s gone from a man who was rumored to be headed to Sunderland over the summer, to one of Pochettino’s most important players in the span of just a few months. His ability to win the ball back quickly and transition it to Spurs’ attacking players is a huge key for the team.

There may be defensive midfield pairings with more creativity and attacking flair, but there aren’t any tougher that Tottenham’s first-choice pairing.
