5. Tough second half for Antoine Griezmann

It was a great season with a bitter ending for Antoine Griezmann. The Frenchman has been key to Atletico’s attack all year. He has scored 32 goals this season including so many clutch goals in the Champions League.

It was Griezmann who scored the game-winning header against FC Barcelona in the quarter-finals and the winning away goal against Bayern Munich in the semis. But he had a rough go in the final, especially the second half.

He had a chance to level up the game with a penalty when Fernando Torres was taken down by Pepe in the box. Given Atletico’s struggles in the attack, this was a fantastic opportunity. But to the avail of Atleti fans, he smashed it off the underside of the crossbar and the ball bounced out. You could tell the reaction of the miss by Koke, who put his hands on his head as the ball bounced back into the penalty spot.

Griezmann was distraught and he let the miss affect him as he basically disappeared for the rest of the game. He made the penalty in the shootout but many fans are left to wonder what would have happened if he had made the penalty in the 48th minute.
