1.Ronaldo’s winning penalty doesn’t justify the poor night he had

He may have scored the penalty that allowed Real Madrid to lift the Champions League trophy, but Cristiano Ronaldo was absolutely dreadful. Earlier in the week, Ronaldo was forced off during training after suffering an apparent injury.

More from Champions League

He was ruled 100% the day before the match but he certainly didn’t play like it. He didn’t command the ball on the wings and gave the Atletico defense very little to worry about. If you are one of the best players in the world, you have to take over games when it matters.

His only real threat in the game was late on when he forced a key Atletico shot block late on in extra time and when he blasted a free kick but it went straight into the wall. You could tell he was hurting when you saw him stretching out his legs during a Real Madrid corner. He was clearly hurting.

But he did score the winning penalty and kept up his billing as one of the best penalty takers in world football. It was a simple shot as Oblak went the other way and Ronaldo ran away and took his shirt off. In the past couple of finals for Real Madrid, Ronaldo has failed to show up. He didn’t help much in the La Decima winning final either. He just scored the last goal, a penalty, when the game was already decided.

People will probably remember the game winner but they won’t remember the whole story.
