Is now the right time for Tottenham to swoop back in to “buy low” on Saido Berahino?

Many Tottenham fans are sick and tired of hearing about Spurs alleged interest in West Brom striker Saido Berahino. The club has been linked strongly with the English forward throughout the last year, but a deal never seems to get over the line. Is now the right time for Spurs to swoop in?

The rationale behind going back in for Berahino now is that his stock might be as low as it’s ever going to be. He’s struggled mightily for West Brom over the past year and many around the Premier League now believe he’s a malcontent in the dressing room. His lack of performance on the pitch coupled with his questionable attitude have significantly depressed his transfer value.

His reputation is so diminished that now the likes of Crystal Palace are plotting moves to steal him away from West Brom. When the news hit of the Eagles interest in Berahino, I began to consider whether or not Tottenham should truly be done with him.

On the one hand, Tottenham have already addressed their obvious deficiency at striker with the purchase of Vincent Janssen. He was clearly recruited to White Hart Lane to serve as cover for Harry Kane. Adding Berahino would add a third striker to a club that has only typically played one striker at a time.

Given Berahino’s questionable attitude and work ethic that could be a potentially disastrous situation for Pochettino. The last thing the Spurs boss wants to do is bring in a locker room cancer to ruin what is currently a top-notch environment in the Tottenham dressing room.

On the other hand, we’re only a year removed from Berahino being viewed as a future Premier League and England star. He’s shown a clear ability to score goals at a high level when he’s properly fit and motivated. If Pochettino could get his attention and focus, he could transform Berahino back into a dangerous striker.

Ultimately, Tottenham’s position on Berahino should come down to a matter of finances. If West Brom are still convinced they can receive a fee exceeding 30 million pounds for their distressed asset then Spurs should end their interest immediately. Berahino is far too big of a risk to take on and that kind of investment.

If, on the other hand, Daniel Levy can work his magic to get the asking price under 20 million pounds then the club should seriously consider moving back in for the talented striker. At a discounted price he could be a hugely valuable asset capable of pushing Tottenham to the top of the Premier League next season.
