Tottenham fans shouldn’t begrudge Christian Eriksen’s desire to be compensated fairly
A select group of Tottenham fans have taken to social media to roast Christian Eriksen for turning down Spurs’ latest contract offer. Perhaps that group of fans should consider shifting their support to Arsenal.
Hurling insults at the Danish midfielder for trying to negotiate the best contract possible is absolutely ridiculous. It’s certainly understandable if you’re disappointed that Eriksen turned down Levy’s latest offer, but it’s not a reason to turn on the very productive midfielder.
First off, if you’re one of those football fans who can’t stand seeing the skyrocketing salaries of professional football players then I can’t help you. If you really dislike it that much, stop supporting the sport in any form or fashion. It’s a simple matter of economics. The sport drives tons of revenue and player salaries get their fair share of that financial pie. Either accept it or find something else to do with your time.
That isn’t the issue for the majority of Tottenham fans I’ve seen criticize Eriksen though. Their issue is that the talented number ten doesn’t do enough to justify him questioning Levy’s offer. This line of thinking is even more maddening to me.
Eriksen is a one-of-a-kind player at Tottenham. He’s a unique presence in Mauricio Pochettino’s attacking midfield with his ability to both distribute and score. His inclusion in the squad affords the rest of Tottenham’s attack to truly flourish. His magic with the ball at his feet mesmerizes opposing defenders and gives others the space to really torment the opposition.
Even if you don’t think Eriksen is that good, he has a right to negotiate the best contract possible. If you accept your employer’s first offer out of blind loyalty then you are a sucker. Eriksen’s situation is no different. He clearly has an affinity for Tottenham and wants to stay, but that’s not a reason for him to accept less than the club are willing to pay him.

In particular, it’s being reported that Eriksen is only looking for a wage package equal to some of the club’s other upper-echelon players. It’s not as if he is looking to make more than Harry Kane here. He’s just looking to be in the same wage ballpark as Kane, Hugo Lloris and Mousa Dembele. Can you really blame him?
Spurs fans it’s ok to be frustrated that Christian Eriksen’s contract saga is dragging on. What’s not OK, is to hurl personal and professional insults in his direction for rejecting Daniel Levy’s first offer. That’s just a smart player looking out for his best interest.
