Mauricio Pochettino wants Tottenham to add another centre forward

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino caught a lot of people off guard with his comments about wanting to play two strikers together at Spurs. That revelation also means that Daniel Levy needs to dip back into the summer transfer market to purchase another striker.

The Spurs manager told the London Evening Standard that he’s wanted Harry Kane to play with a striking partner ever since he first arrived at White Hart Lane. Unfortunately for the Tottenham boss, he didn’t have the personnel to make that happen last season.

The arrival of Vincent Janssen has changed things dramatically. Now Pochettino can reasonably start two strikers in the same formation. The two have already shown an impressive ability to partner together in just two Premier League matches.

While Tottenham fans will surely embrace this swashbuckling strategy, it has significant ramifications on the club’s transfer policy. If Pochettino wants to start Kane and Janssen together on a regular basis, the club will once again find themselves short of striking options.

Originally, most believed that Janssen had been purchased to provide cover for Kane. Tottenham admittedly relied too much on their English talisman last season, and their attack would have been crushed if he was forced to miss significant time. Spurs fans breathed a sigh of relief when Janssen arrived to guard against that potentially disastrous scenario.

Now it’s possible that Spurs need to have cover for two starting strikers, not just one. It could be argued that Tottenham find themselves even worse off in terms of striking depth than they did last year.

It seems quite obvious that Levy and company must purchase at least one more striker if Pochettino really intends to start two strikers on a regular basis. That would be a pretty significant shift in Tottenham’s current transfer target list.

As it stands currently, the club have been strongly linked to another wide player, and a central attacking midfielder that could push Christian Eriksen. The acquisition of another goalkeeper has also been strongly rumored. There have been almost zero mentions of adding another centre forward.

It should be pointed out that Tottenham do have some other options that could be deployed as second strikers. Players like Son Heung-Min, for example, can’t play as a single centre forward, but might be serviceable playing with a more classic striker. That could mitigate Tottenham’s injury risk up front.

Still, Spurs would certainly be more comfortable if they added one more true centre forward to the senior squad. Unless you believe one of the youth options is ready (and I don’t) then paying to bring in a striker prospect would be smart business.

Maybe Pochettino doesn’t really intend to play two strikers together all that often, but if he does, the club need to add another striker before the summer transfer window slams shut. Otherwise, they’ll be taking the same gamble on striker health they got away with last year.
