Tottenham fans don’t need to panic…yet

Tottenham still have time to secure an excellent summer transfer window

Tottenham fans who have taken to social media to curse Daniel Levy need to take a collective deep breath. There’s still ample time in the summer transfer window left for Spurs to drastically strengthen their squad.

As we all know, the window doesn’t slam shut until Wednesday. That leaves Levy and company over 48 hours to work on deals. Levy is a tough negotiator who causes transfer sagas to drag on for weeks. He is not, a stupid man who doesn’t understand deadlines.

That means, for example, that Georges-Kevin N’Koudou is still a safe bet to become a Tottenham player. He’s been training at White Hart Lane for the better part of a week. If he isn’t announced soon it’ll be a major shock for everyone involved.

Signing N’Koudou isn’t enough to “fix” the Spurs transfer window, but it’s a healthy start. The club still need to make a couple of additional purchases to provide depth for the squad. My emphasis there is on “a couple.” It’s not as if Levy and company need to bring in seven signings before Wednesday.

Tottenham fans have become panicked over the lack of depth in the squad because of the sheer number of player sales over the past week. Nacer Chadli was sold to West Brom today. Nabil Bentaleb was loaned to Schalke last week. DeAndre Yedlin was jettisoned to Sunderland. Ryan Mason and Tom Carroll still seem likely to be sold. That represents a large quantity of Spurs talent, but not a ton of quality.

Look closely at those who’ve departed. You can argue that Chadli is the only player who was likely to be a regular member of the match day squad. He likely could have held down a place as a substitute, but he was never going to crack the starting XI.

The other players mentioned above would have struggled to find their way into the match day 18. Yedlin was the club’s third choice at right back. Bentaleb was entirely out of favor with Pochettino. Mason and Carroll are being crowded out by the purchase of Victor Wanyama. The club haven’t lost a single player who was going to play a prominent role this year.

With that being said, it’s perfectly reasonable to point out the need for depth. The departure of so many players has left the club light on potential injury replacements. Really though, does anyone strongly prefer Mason and Carroll to Harry Winks? Is Josh Onomah such a step down from Nacer Chadli? Perhaps those are downgrades in terms of experience, but not in terms of talent or upside.

More from Tottenham Hotspur

What we need to watch for the rest of the transfer window is whether or not Levy can land a couple of key acquisitions that will greatly upgrade either the club’s bench or starting XI. The club really don’t need a lot more quantity, we need an upgrade in quality.

As such, hold off on your meltdowns until Wednesday. Tottenham are just a couple of purchases away from a stellar summer transfer window.
