5 stars Chelsea could sell in January
4. Nemanja Matic
The Serbian midfielder has started all three matches under Conte thus far, but he hasn’t played all that well. Chelsea could easily tire of his mediocre play and jettison him this January as a result.
His Whoscored.com player rating average of 6.81 this season is almost the definition of Premier League mediocrity. He hasn’t hurt Chelsea with his play in the middle of the pitch, but he hasn’t done much to help his club either.
At this point in his career he’s just an exceedingly boring player. He lacks the quickness to really cover a lot of ground in defense, and he’s never been a terrific offensive player. There’s just not enough left in his game to be a difference maker at this level.
At 28 years of age, this January might represent the club’s last chance to really cash in on his transfer value. There are quite a few European clubs who’d be willing to pay Matic based on his reputation rather than his actual current ability. Look for the Serbian to find a new home once the winter window arrives.
