Jan Vertonghen-7

The Belgian defender deserves credit for stepping up his game in Alderweireld’s absence. He isn’t as talented or steady as his countryman, but he gave Spurs a solid effort today.

In particular, he did a nice job of distributing the ball from the back. That’s a task that’s usually left to Alderweireld, but Vertonghen has assumed the role in his absence. He even managed to spray a few long diagonals that could have potentially unlocked his wingers. It was a good effort on the day for Super Jan.

Eric Dier-6.5

Dier gave a better performance than he did against Leverkusen, but it’s clear he is a defensive midfielder at this point. He lacks the commanding presence in the box that you’d expect from such a large defender.

More from Tottenham Hotspur

In particular, his daring flick of the ball behind for a corner really could have put his keeper under pressure. He got away with it, but it serves as an example of how Dier’s decision-making has been questionable at centre back. The sooner Alderweireld returns, the sooner Dier can transition back into the midfield.

Hugo Lloris-7.5

I’m running out of superlatives for the French captain. His first half denial of Charlie Daniels was an amazing save that kept Tottenham in the match. It was every bit as good as his stop on Chicharito during the week.

Lloris didn’t have much to do after denying Daniels, but that save was enough for a solidly above-average rating.
