Though his rise hasn’t been quite as unlikely as Leicester City teammate Jamie Vardy, no one would’ve expected Riyad Mahrez to be up for Ballon d’Or this time last season. But the reigning PFA Player of the Year is here — and likely here to stay.

Mahrez was the most dynamic player in the EPL last season with 17 goals and 11 assists to help Leicester reach immortality with the unlikeliest of titles. No player caused more EPL defenders to hold their breath as simply the sight of Mahrez on the right-wing would cause immediate panic.

With a left foot that’s equally proficient at shooting, passing or dribbling, it’s scary to think that Mahrez is still improving at age 25.

Of Leicester’s “Big Three” of Mahrez, Vardy and N’Golo Kante, the Algerian was always seen as the likeliest to leave King Power Stadium, given the current thirst for inverted wing players. But as the names of big clubs were tossed around, Mahrez still suited up for the Foxes in preseason and remained a Leicester player as rumors swirled up until the deadline day.

Though his league form has yet to take off, Mahrez has introduced himself to the Champions League with three goals in three matches as Leicester have already clinched a spot in the Round of 16.
