Tottenham lose to Leverkusen: 10 instant Spurs reactions
Tottenham were awful against Leverkusen
Any Tottenham fan who paid real money to watch Spurs take on Leverkusen tonight deserve an apology and a refund. It might have been the worst effort the squad have put forth under Mauricio Pochettino. If you’re expecting optimism, you’ve come to the wrong place. Read my ten instant reactions to Spurs calamitous match against Leverkusen.
1-Harry Kane and Toby Alderweireld can’t come back fast enough
Perhaps it’s unfair to hammer Tottenham’s performance since they’re legitimately playing without their best attacker and their best defender. That isn’t an excuse for how bad Spurs were tonight, but it’s a least a glimmer of hope for the future. Help should be on the way soon.
2-Georges Kevin N’Koudou should have started
I wrote a pretty lengthy article about this ahead of the match and was promptly proven right. Tottenham got absolutely nothing out of either Son Heung-Min or Moussa Sissoko. Playing the French starlet would have been the right call.

3-Moussa Sissoko might be a flop
I’m not completely ready to give up on the French midfielder, but he has played some truly awful matches in a Spurs kit. The clock is ticking quite loudly on his Spurs career. He needs to improve immediately, or else find a Championship Club willing to play him on a regular basis.
4-Christian Eriksen is in a slump
That’s the kindest way I can describe the Dane’s current run of form. He’s been an absolute passenger on multiple occasions. His performance against Leverkusen was even worse than Sissoko’s disastrous 90 minutes for me.
5. Son Heung-Min just isn’t that good
We were all seduced by Son’s smiling face when he started the season on such a tear. Unfortunately, he’s crashed back down to Earth recently. He failed to create even a glimmer of a scoring chance today against his old club.
6. Spurs need January reinforcements
I happen to like Harry Winks, but there’s no way he’s ready to play in a match like this. Tottenham simply have to improve their squad depth in January. Right now, they are too thin to handle any sort of significant injury in the midfield.
7. Playing at Wembley is a mistake
I understand all of the reason why Tottenham felt they needed to play their Champions League matches at Wembley. I even supported the decision. However at this juncture, it’s clearly proven to be a disaster. If only the club could move the rest of their Champions League matches back to the comfortable confines of White Hart Lane.
8. Danny Rose is the Tottenham heart beat
The mercurial left back isn’t Tottenham’s best player, but he is absolutely the spirit of the squad. There’s zero chance he would have let his teammates put forth such a weak performance if he were on the pitch.

9. I’m terrified of the North London Derby
Tottenham will go into the Arsenal match with tons of questions, and very few answers. The Gunners certainly sense blood in the water. Yesterday I wanted Spurs to take all three points, now I’d settle for a draw in a heart beat.
10. Eric Dier needs a few weeks off
He made some absolutely elementary mistakes today at centre back. He should thank the Lord above that none of his stupid plays resulted in Leverkusen goals. Dier easily could have given up two or three scores on the evening. I don’t know what’s wrong with him, but he needs some time on the bench to figure it out.
