Tottenham fans have nothing to fear
You can certainly tell that the International Break has gotten the English press a little bored. That’s why The Sun has chosen to try to wind up Tottenham fans with the “story” that Spurs and star striker Harry Kane have put their contract talks on hold.
Such reports are absolute nonsense. Kane is under contract with Tottenham until 2020. He just signed a new deal with the club last year. The striker has missed most of the current season due to injury. Exactly what has Kane done to merit a new deal?
The only reason that Tottenham engaged Kane’s representatives in contract talks is because Mauricio Pochettino and Daniel Levy are trying to proactively lock up the club’s young core. They’re only really interested in signing Kane to a new deal if it’s going to be save Spurs money in the long run. They aren’t in the business of handing out money to players just to make them feel better.
If Harry Kane wants to become the club’s top earner, it’s likely that Levy and company would be willing to let that happen. That doesn’t mean they’re just going to blindly meet his contract demands. It’s entirely possible that Kane’s representatives are asking for wages higher than Tottenham have ever paid anyone.
Frankly, that’s exactly what Kane’s people should be doing. They should be asking Tottenham to pay Kane something in the same range that Arsenal are offering Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez. He hasn’t accomplished as much as that pair of Gunners, but he’s younger and has more prime years ahead of him. It’s not out of the question that Kane is pushing for wages approaching £200 thousand per week.
I can only imagine the look on Levy’s face as he received that sort of demand. It would be something akin to how you might look if you saw a ghost in the shower. Levy would meet such a request with absolute shock and horror.
At least that would be his initial reaction. After he processed the information and gained perspective, he’d realize that it’s time to really engage in complicated negotiations. The smartest thing for Tottenham to do would be to put contract talks on ice.

Again, Kane is signed through 2020. Spurs aren’t under any pressure to move quickly to get a new deal done. They’re happy to let Kane’s representatives stew and come back with a more “reasonable” contract offer. The club have nothing but time on their hands.
Expect the British press to continue to publish loads of stories about Tottenham’s contract negotiations with quite a few of their stars over the coming weeks. The club’s recent rash of new contracts have gotten everyone’s rumor mill going full steam. Spurs fans would be wise to ignore the fear mongering. Relations between the club and Harry Kane are just fine.
