Tottenham’s winter transfer window could be full of Moussas

Spurs fans shouldn’t expect the club to purchase too many new players in January. However, it’s possible that Tottenham sells one Moussa while acquiring another one in the winter transfer window.

We’ve covered the possibility of Moussa Sissoko leaving White Hart Lane at some length already. The French international did show glimpses of his potential in the club’s 5-0 smashing of Swansea, but he’s still on thin ice with manager Mauricio Pochettino. For the right price, another club could certainly acquire him in January.

What we haven’t talked much about, at least lately, is the possibility of adding a Moussa in January. The potential target of Pochettino’s affections is Celtic hitman Moussa Dembele. The club tried to purchase him from Fulham last season, but couldn’t complete a deal. Reportedly, negotiations advanced to the point where the French forward underwent a medical at White Hart Lane.

Instead, Fulham elected to send him to Celtic. That move has been perfect for the striker’s development. He’s lit up the score sheet for his new club this season with 15 goals in just 22 appearances. Most impressively, he managed three goals in Celtic’s five Champions League appearances.

While Brendan Rodgers would certainly prefer to hold on to Dembele for the entire season, it’s a distinct possibility that he’ll move in January. In particular, Premier League clubs like Tottenham and Liverpool are keeping tabs on the young forward. It’s hard to imagine Liverpool adding another striker if they keep Daniel Sturridge, but Spurs should definitely be in the market for another striker in January.

Vincent Janssen may yet have a future with the club, but he didn’t even make the squad against the Swans. That’s a pretty clear sign that Pochettino isn’t happy with his options behind Harry Kane. Adding a bright young talent like Dembele in January could give the Spurs a real boost in their quest for a Premier League or FA Cup title.

It’s not difficult to see Dembele playing with Kane as well. Pochettino clearly showed an interest in playing two strikers when both Kane and Janssen were fit earlier this year. While the Dutchman didn’t hold up his end of the bargain, Dembele might come in and make that sort of formation thrive.

More from Tottenham Hotspur

The real question is whether or not Daniel Levy is going to be willing to spend the cash necessary to acquire a player of Dembele’s caliber this January. Celtic will be looking for a significant fee to acquire their star forward. The club would likely need to sell several squad players to help defray the potential cost of such an acquisition.

It might be a long shot, but Spurs may trade Moussas this summer. That would certainly be a welcome deal for many Tottenham fans.
