Real Madrid’s attack will look more like Barcelona’s next year

Real Madrid may be leading Barcelona in the La Liga standings, but Los Blancos are going to pattern their attack after their arch rivals’ moving forward. The impending acquisition of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will give Real Madrid the same style of attack as their Catalan rivals.

In case you missed it, the Gabon striker has made it very plain that he expects to leave Borussia Dortmund this summer. His dream club is Real Madrid. It doesn’t take a genius to predict his move to the Spanish capital in the upcoming transfer window.

Once Aubameyang arrives at Real Madrid, he’ll present Zinedine Zidane with an interesting dilemma. He certainly is too talented a player to leave on the bench, but where should he be deployed in Zidane’s starting XI?

Ultimately, Zidane will elect to start Aubameyang as his central striker. He isn’t necessarily a classic centre forward, but that sort of player is going out of style in Spain. All you need to do is look at Barcelona’s star-studded attack to see what’s possible without a classic front man.

More from Real Madrid

Aubameyang will join Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale to form Real Madrid’s devastating answer to Barcelona’s MSN. It isn’t as if Los Blancos need to copy their hated rivals, it just so happens that the best players available will lend themselves to shifting their offensive philosophy.

Acquiring Aubameyang will still allow Real Madrid to sell Karim Benzema or Alvaro Morata this summer. They will likely keep one talented centre forward as a premium attacking option off the bench, but there won’t be enough playing time for the two of them. Expect Benzema to be the loser here. His lack of form combined with his advanced age make him the smarter player to sell.

For the record, there’s really no reason to get caught up in which Real Madrid attacker will start the match in the middle of the pitch. Zidane is smart enough to understand that rotating all three throughout the season (and during individual matches) will cause opposing defenses the most problems. It will also allow these massive stars to avoid the physical pounding of playing as a central striker on a regular basis.

It may seem strange for Real Madrid fans, but they will copy Barcelona’s style this summer. The arrival of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is going to make Los Blancos’ attack just like their hated rivals’ trio of MSN.
