Tottenham’s Harry Kane is worried about Marcus Rashford
It’s safe to say that Harry Kane prefers Tottenham’s club building philosophy to that of Manchester United’s. In fact, the England striker is quite concerned about how many opportunities Marcus Rashford is going to get under Jose Mourinho.
The Express quoted Kane yesterday as saying that he “hopes Rashford won’t get pushed into the background.” He made that statement after pointing out that United’s recent philosophy has been to hire a big manager to purchase big players. His obvious inference is that United are not providing their Academy products enough opportunities to break through to the first team.
That isn’t a problem for young players at Tottenham. Mauricio Pochettino has made bringing young talent through to the first team a cornerstone of his tenure at Spurs. Players like Harry Kane and Dele Alli have emerged as word-class stars under the Argentine boss.
In sharp contrast, Rashford has struggled to find consistent playing time this season under Mourinho. He showed the ability to shoulder the scoring load under Louis van Gaal, but hasn’t enjoyed Mourinho’s full confidence. The arrival of Zlatan Ibrahimovic has significantly cut into Rashford’s opportunities at Old Trafford.

One has to wonder whether Kane is genuinely concerned for his England teammate, or if he was attempting to sow some discord in the United dressing room. Rashford can’t be happy with his role this season and it’s not impossible that he would look for a move away this summer. Kane might even fancy the idea of Rashford joining him at White Hart Lane.
I’ll have to admit that might be a bit Machiavellian for Kane. It’s far more likely that he genuinely likes Rashford as a person, and wants to see him get the chance to showcase his talents in the Premier League. That isn’t happening for him now, and it’s tough to see things changing in immediate future. It’s simply the price young players pay at a club with virtually unlimited financial resources.
