Steve Hitchen is the perfect hire for Tottenham

Many Tottenham fans began to panic when news leaked that Paul Mitchell was going to quit his job in charge of the club’s scouting and recruitment. Those same fans should be singing Daniel Levy’s praises today. Steve Hitchen is an excellent choice to take over some of Mitchell’s responsibilities.

This won’t be Hitchen’s first tenure at White Hart Lane. He was a key member of the club’s scouting staff during Harry Redknapp’s time in charge of Spurs. Most notably, he was the driving force behind the club’s identification and recruitment of Croatian midfielder Luka Modric.

That isn’t Hitchen’s only high-profile scouting success though. He also is credited with urging Liverpool to move for Luis Suarez. It’s safe to say that move worked out pretty well for the fans at Anfield.

All we really know about Hitchen’s new job is that he’ll take charge of Tottenham’s scouting department. It remains to be seen how much input he’ll have in terms of actual player recruitment. Frankly, that’s of very little concern to me. Spurs can use their worldwide reputation and financial might to get deals done once the right player is identified.

More from Tottenham Hotspur

Over the next several transfer windows, the need to purchase underrated talent is going to be vital for Tottenham. The club won’t have a ton of transfer cash to spend as they work on paying for the new White Hart Lane. That means Spurs will need to focus their resources on more obscure transfer targets. They aren’t quite ready to go toe-to-toe with European’s financial elite as of yet.

The need to be conservative financially shouldn’t limit the club’s ambition on the pitch though. Pochettino has his squad knocking on the door of becoming true Premier League title contenders. If not for the Chelsea juggernaut, Spurs might well hoist silverware at the conclusion of this season.

Just imagine the possibilities if Hitchen could uncover a hidden gem or two in the next 12 months. Adding even one more world-class player could be enough to push the Tottenham squad to the top of the Premier League table. Investing in such a talented scout could save the club millions and win them a Premier League title.
