Tottenham fans should stop dreaming about Isco

There’s a very real possibility that Isco might leave Real Madrid this summer, but it won’t be to make a move to Tottenham. This rumour helps to sell papers in England, but it’s never going to happen.

The Mirror is the latest British tabloid to try to peddle this dream to Spurs fans. By now, you know the details of the story. Isco is struggling to find a place in Zinedine Zidane’s starting XI, and might seek a move away from the La Liga giants this summer. Mauricio Pochettino is rumoured to be a big admirer of the classy Spaniard, so a move to White Hart lane must be inevitable right?

Wrong. There are a litany of reasons why Isco to Tottenham will never come to pass. First off, he’s entirely too expensive for the club at the moment. He’s willing to leave Real Madrid, but we’ve seen zero indications that he’s willing to accept a significant pay cut. Does anyone really think Daniel Levy is going to match what he’s making at Madrid?

Remember, this is a club that have a massive stadium project to pay for. Now is not the time in Tottenham history where we’re going to see massive transfer purchases. The strategy has clearly been to tie down the club’s current stars with long-term contracts. That won’t leave much room for Pochettino to bring in new players.

More from Tottenham Hotspur

The players that Pochettino does bring in will have to be talented youngsters who can grow into world-class stars. Like it or not, Spurs just aren’t going to be in a financial position to secure massive talents in their prime. Purchasing a 24-year-old midfielder who is a full Spanish international is entirely out of the realm of possibility.

Don’t misunderstand what I’m saying here, Isco is a player who could be very interested in a move to Tottenham. They are a nice fit for his style of play and the opportunity to win silverware in North London is certainly there. It’s just not a financially viable transaction.

Tottenham fans thinking about summer transfers need to concern themselves with the likes of Youri Tielemans as their summer daydreams. Isco isn’t coming to White Hart Lane (or Wembley) in a home kit anytime soon.
