Tottenham need Gylfi Sigurdsson to move to Everton

Ross Barkley’s chances of moving to Tottenham this summer may depend squarely on Everton’s ability to sign a suitable replacement. Former Spurs star Gylfi Sigurdsson may be the man to help Barkley complete the move to North London.

Sources in England claim that Ronald Koeman is very high on the Swansea midfielder. Sigurdsson didn’t fit into Mauricio Pochettino’s initial plans at Tottenham, but the Spurs boss admits he underestimated his quality. Now that the Icelandic star has been allowed to display his full range of abilities for the Swans, he’s won himself quite a few admirers around the Premier League.

It’s really no surprise that Koeman is among them. He values skill on the ball much more than pure athleticism. The Everton boss wants a very cerebral and skillful player to pull the strings for his attack. Sigurdsson certainly fits that description.

Ironically, Koeman already has a very productive number ten in the form of Ross Barkley. Unfortunately for the Toffees, they may be forced to part with him this summer. He only has one more season left on his current contract. Koeman is adamant that he will either need to sign a new deal this summer or else he’ll be sold.

More from Tottenham Hotspur

Selling Barkley would be a much easier decision if Sigurdsson was already in the squad to replace him. Swansea will struggle to keep hold of him even if they manage to avoid relegation. If they are sent down to the Championship, they’ll have no chance to keep him. Look for Everton to try to take advantage of Swansea’s horrible season.

If they’re successful in their swoop for Sigurdsson, it will set off massive alarm bells at Tottenham. Pochettino realizes Spurs are only a few key signings away from being legitimate Premier League title contenders. Adding a dynamic midfielder like Barkley could round out an already dangerous Tottenham attack.

Next: Everton are done negotiating with Ross Barkley

Ronald Koeman may be ready to trade in athleticism for brains in his midfield. If he is able to sign Gylfi Sigurdsson this summer, look for Ross Barkley to bag his bags for the lily white side of North London.
