Tottenham could use Kelechi Iheanacho

It wasn’t so long ago that most Manchester City fans thought Kelechi Iheanacho was the club’s striker of the future. Now that Gabriel Jesus has come along, the 20-year-old Nigerian is a forgotten man in Pep Guardiola’s squad. Tottenham should take advantage of City’s abundance of striking talent.

When your manager jokes that to receive more playing time you might need a different manager, it’s time to seek a transfer elsewhere. That’s precisely what Guardiola said about Iheanacho earlier this season. At the time, most thought it was hyperbole. As the season has progressed, it’s looked more and more accurate.

The talented young centre forward only appeared in 19 Premier League matches on the year for City. The majority of those occurred early in the year before Jesus’ arrival. When the Brazilian was present and fit, Iheanacho often found himself outside Guardiola’s match day squad.

It’s possible that Iheanacho could be in line for more playing time if Sergio Aguero departs, but I’d expect Guardiola to purchase a different option. It’s likely that City will have at least two strikers ahead of Iheanacho on the depth chart next season.

More from Tottenham Hotspur

That makes him expendable. Tottenham would be wise to test City’s resolve. As it currently stands, Mauricio Pochettino is still searching for a reliable backup to Harry Kane. Vincent Janssen isn’t a total lost cause, but there are serious doubts as to whether or not he’s good enough to fill the role. Spurs will almost certainly add another centre forward option this summer.

Preferably, Pochettino will add a young player who can grow along with the other youngsters at Spurs. Iheanacho’s age and obvious ability certainly fit the bill. He could instantly become the club’s second choice behind Kane. He also has the flexibility to play alongside England’s top striker against certain opponents.

The real question is whether or not City are willing to ship Iheanacho to a Premier League rival. Selling a young talent within your own league can set you up for years of torment. Guardiola and company would be smart to ship him out of England.

However, it doesn’t really seem that Guardiola believes in his talent in the slightest. As such, it’s at least possible he could allow him to move to Tottenham for a reasonable transfer fee. If Pep’s up for it, Spurs should swoop in and steal the talented striking starlet away from Manchester City.
