Tottenham are plotting a big move for Thomas Lemar

Mauricio Pochettino knows that his Spurs squad needs to add another elite attacker this summer. After initial interest in stars like Wilfried Zaha and Douglas Costa, Tottenham have finally begun to zero in on Thomas Lemar as their top transfer target.

Sky Bet hasn’t installed Spurs as the favourites to sign the Monaco star, but the odds are starting to turn in Tottenham’s favour. The most recent odds place Pochettino’s chances at 8/1. It’s clear that the club’s interest in the silky winger is starting to attract the notice of bettors all across Europe.

Lemar’s season for Monaco was nothing short of sensational. He posted the second highest Whoscored.com player rating average for the French champions with a mark of 7.48. For the sake of comparison, that put him just behind Fabinho. Interestingly, it puts him ahead of several of his more acclaimed attacking teammates. He graded out significantly higher than both Bernardo Silva and Kylian Mbappe.

Not surprisingly, officials at Monaco are desperate to hang on to Lemar for another season or two. They’ve already lost Silva and most believe Mbappe will leave this summer as well. Keeping the talented Frenchman would give the club a chance to maintain some level of offensive continuity.

More from Tottenham Hotspur

Lemar may want to avoid being the last star left at the club. Monaco will do their best to rebuild this summer, but it’s hard to imagine they’ll stay atop Ligue One next year. PSG have too much money to be supplanted by Monaco for two seasons in a row.

The unrest at the club is what gives Spurs a real chance to get a deal done. It will, however, require Daniel Levy to open up the club’s coffers. Monaco could easily demand a transfer fee of somewhere around £40 million for the talented starlet. Tottenham would be wise to spend whatever it takes to add a player of his talent, age and experience.

Thomas Lemar is one of the few possible summer additions that could force his way into Tottenham’s starting XI. That’s precisely why Spurs are zeroing in on him as their top transfer target.
