Tottenham should launch a raid on Manchester United

There have been numerous stories connecting Manchester United with a summer raid on Tottenham. Instead of selling the likes of Danny Rose or Eric Dier to Jose Mourinho’s club, Mauricio Pochettino should be plotting a summer swoop of his own.

Spurs should strongly consider making a bold move for United attacker Anthony Martial. The Frenchman suddenly finds his place in Mourinho’s lineup in serious question. United’s decision to sign Ivan Perisic to a big money move this summer makes things quite crowded on United’s left flank.

Tottenham, on the other hand, are in the market for a dynamic attacker. The club have been linked with a variety of speedy wingers already. Spurs have missed out on Wilfried Zaha and Bruma already. Pochettino still has Daniel Levy investigating the possibility of signing Thomas Lemar and others to fill the void.

Martial is certainly a player with the requisite talent to make an impact under Pochettino. He isn’t a solid defensive player at this point in his career, but it’s highly probable that working under the Spurs manager could change his mindset. Remember that Martial is just 21-years-old. He has lots of career development left ahead of him.

More from Tottenham Hotspur

He’d be a terrific addition to Tottenham’s attacking midfield rotation. Imagine Christian Eriksen, Son Heung-Min, Dele Alli and Martial all rotating in Pochettino’s attacking midfield trio. That group could create quite a few problems for opposing defenders. Martial’s place would give the group something it currently lacks.

Of course, the challenge here for Spurs would be bringing United to the negotiating table. Mourinho would likely instruct Ed Woodward to insist that Danny Rose or Eric Dier be included as makeweights in any potential deal. That sort of demand would probably be a non-starter for Levy and company.

Next: Manchester United send harsh message to Martial

Even without their involvement, a transfer fee of £35 or £40 million would likely be enough to get United’s attention. Given the money they are spending on Perisic, it’s at least possible that they’ll be looking to offload Martial. At the very least, it would be a fun story for the English media to go crazy over for a day or two. There’s no downside to Tottenham making a bold move for Anthony Martial this summer.
