Tottenham want more than Kelechi Iheanacho and cash

Manchester City are preparing a massive bid to poach Kyle Walker from Tottenham, but it’s going to cost Pep Guardiola more than money in the end. Mauricio Pochettino and company are interested in seeing two City starlets head to North London in return for the talented right back.

It won’t surprise anyone to learn that Spurs want to see Kelechi Iheanacho included in the deal. The talented centre forward seems ticketed for a big money move to Leicester City, but there’s still time to change his final destination. Previously City officials have been adamant they won’t ship him to a club capable of rivalling them for the title, but they may be forced to make an exception if they want to add Walker this summer.

Iheanacho isn’t the only player that Tottenham want to include in the deal though. Pochettino also has his eyes on City starlet Jadon Sancho. Similar to the situation with Iheanacho, City have balked at including him in the deal thus far.

However, his refusal to sign a new deal with City might change their thinking. Arsenal, Tottenham and several other Premier League clubs are already working to turn Sancho’s head. His stellar performance for England’s U-17 Euro team has made him one of the most intriguing starlets in Europe. City have quite the fight on their hands to keep him in the fold.

More from Tottenham Hotspur

Don’t forget that City are running out of time and options to solve their right back crisis. Dani Alves’ recent decision to snub Guardiola and sign with PSG puts the Citizens in an awkward position. Walker is suddenly their only top-shelf option to cure their problem position. If Guardiola is unsuccessful in landing Walker (or another big name) right back this summer, City fans will have serious questions about his long-term planning.

From the Tottenham perspective, asking City to include players instead of just cash is a brilliant plan. Spurs officials realize that City are flush with cash. Forcing them to pay well above the market rate for Walker doesn’t really cause them any pain. Taking two of their most talented young attackers is a much different story. Their loss could really cause City serious heartburn.

Ultimately, swap deals are pretty rare among Premier League clubs these days, but Tottenham are smart to insist on one here. Getting back high level talent in exchange for Kyle Walker is the most direct way to make this a good deal for Spurs.
