Tottenham need to go all out for Mateo Kovacic

Daniel Levy is justifiably under significant fire from the Tottenham fan base. Spurs are the only Premier League club yet to make a summer signing. Fortunately for the club’s miserly transfer chief, he still has one path left to save the window for his club.

Simply put, Levy must do everything he can to lure Mateo Kovacic to North London. The talented Croatian midfielder is determined to leave Real Madrid this summer, and reports claim Los Blancos are willing to let him go for somewhere around £30 million.

There are a number of reasons why acquiring Kovacic is the perfect cure for what ails Levy. First and foremost, prying a talented player away from Real Madrid would thrill Tottenham fans. Many Spurs supporters, myself included, still cringe when they hear the words “special relationship” after the club’s one-sided association with the La Liga giants. Luka Modric and Gareth Bale both were sold from Tottenham to Real Madrid without any other talent coming back to England.

Finally bringing a talented Los Blancos star to England would close the door on the absurd relationship between the two clubs. Bringing Kovacic to London wouldn’t balance the scales completely, but it would at least serve as a step in the right direction.

The idea of purchasing Kovacic is about more than just setting things right with Los Blancos. He also happens to be just the sort of player Spurs should be looking to add to their squad. Kovacic isn’t leaving Spain because of lacklustre play, he’s simply being pushed out by other world-class players.

More from Tottenham Hotspur

Remember, he’s still just 23 years of age. His best football is clearly still ahead of him. A player with his level of athleticism and skill would blossom under the tutelage of Mauricio Pochettino. It’s not an exaggeration to say he could be just the midfielder to elevate the entire squad. His ability to contribute to Spurs’ defense and offense make him uniquely suited to force his way into the club’s starting XI.

It would be easy for Real Madrid to ask for a transfer fee upwards of £50 million for a player of his talent and experience. For reference, that’s the asking price Everton have put on Ross Barkley’s head. Kovacic has accomplished more in a better squad than the England international. Him being available for just over half the price of Barkley is a borderline steal.

His affordable price makes him a target that Levy can certainly get behind. His age and price make it very likely that his value will escalate over the next few years. Essentially, he’s the perfect player for the Tottenham transfer chief to chase.

Daniel Levy hasn’t had a good summer, but signing Mateo Kovacic could change all that in a heartbeat. He may be the only player that can turn Levy from a zero to a hero with Spurs fans.
