Tottenham will struggle to attract Serge Aurier

When Kyle Walker left Tottenham, Spurs immediately turned their attention towards acquiring a new right back. Ironically, the continued presence of Kieran Trippier in the squad may prevent Mauricio Pochettino from purchasing a big name replacement.

The latest fullback to be prominently linked with the North London club is PSG star Serge Aurier. This isn’t the first time he’s been linked with a move to Spurs, but reports from England claim that he’s told PSG officials he wants to leave this summer. Allegedly, Spurs, Manchester United, City and Inter Milan have all expressed interest in providing him an escape.

Part of Aurier’s motivation to leave the Parisian giants is the arrival of Dani Alves. The legendary fullback was originally ticketed to join Pep Guardiola’s project at Manchester City, but snubbed the English club in favour of PSG. Ironically, that decision likely hastened Walker’s move to City.

At any rate, Aurier doesn’t think he’ll receive consistent playing time with Alves in the squad. He’s younger and more athletic than his Brazilian counterpart, but he lacks his consistency. It’s a solid bet that Alves will get the starting nod from Unai Emery more often than not.

More from Tottenham Hotspur

That would seem to put Tottenham in a pretty good spot to lure Aurier to England. Unfortunately for those who want to see that move come to fruition, Kieran Trippier is still at Spurs. Aurier will have serious concerns over whether or not he can dislodge the English international from Pochettino’s starting XI. The fact that Spurs saw fit to give the former Burnley man a new five-year contract makes it clear how much confidence they place in his abilities.

Aurier is not significantly more likely to become an every match starter at Tottenham than he would be at PSG. That isn’t just because Pochettino fancies Trippier. It’s primarily due to the Argentine gaffer’s desire to rotate his fullbacks consistently. The biggest reason Tottenham want to add another big time right back this summer is to make sure they aren’t forced to overplay Trippier. Fresh fullbacks are vital to the way Pochettino wants his squad to play.

Next: Tottenham should reconsider Aurier move

Kieran Trippier may not be every Tottenham fan’s favourite fullback, but he’s proving to be a complicating factor to Spurs’ transfer plans. His presence in the squad might be enough to keep the club on the periphery of the chase to sign Serge Aurier.
