2. Joao Cancelo

Think of this spot in the last as a holding place for whatever right back Tottenham choose to purchase. At the moment, Cancelo is the most likely purchase, but that could change very quickly based on Valencia’s demands and other available players in the market.

If Ricardo Pereira really isn’t available due to issues with his ownership/representation, then Cancelo may be the best possible signing for Pochettino. Purchasing him at the reported transfer fee of £25 million would still allow Spurs to pocket a significant profit from the sale of Kyle Walker.

Cancelo has shown glimpses of world-class potential for both club and country. His ability to hold up well against the talented attackers in La Liga bodes well for a successful transition to the Premier League. He isn’t the physical beast that Walker is, but he does have significant more pace than Kieran Trippier.

More from Tottenham Hotspur

Specifically, Cancelo’s addition would seem to fit Pochettino’s desire to deploy a 3-4-3 formation against certain opponents. His speed and trickery down the flank would give the Spurs attack more width. Trippier is excellent at crossing the ball when his club is enjoying a large possession advantage, but his lack of foot speed allows him to get caught out in transition. Cancelo has the pace to correct those sorts of mistakes.

Right back is the one position that Tottenham need to strengthen most before the summer transfer window slams shut. Relying on Kieran Trippier to stay healthy all season is too big a risk for a Premier League title contender.
