Tottenham are running the rule over Kieran Tierney

Mauricio Pochettino is constantly looking to add young, high-end talent to his Tottenham squad. The latest starlet to find his way on Spurs’ radar is Celtic left back Kieran Tierney.

Reports from England claim that Spurs have scouted the Scottish left back several times over the past few weeks. Moussa Dembele may have brought the scouts to Celtic’s matches, but the 20-year-old fullback has caught the eye of several Premier League scouting departments.

It’s very possible that Tottenham are evaluating Tierney as a possible alternative to Ryan Sessegnon. The Fulham starlet has been one of Pochettino’s top targets all summer long, but disappointed Spurs by signing a new contract with his Championship club. It’s worth noting that Daniel Levy and company are still pursuing Sessegnon despite his apparent commitment to Fulham.

At any rate, Tierney is a player worthy of Premier League interest in his own right. He may not be quite the athlete that Sessegnon is, but he’s proven to be an excellent offensive player from the left back position. Tierney’s made quite a name for himself providing quality service for the Celtic attack.

More from Tottenham Hotspur

The one key issue that isn’t addressed in any of the reports linking Spurs to Tierney is the issue of a transfer fee. Celtic aren’t under any pressure to sell for financial reasons, but Tottenham could try to turn the starlet’s head with a significant wage increase. The club’s rigid wage structure works against them when trying to acquire talent from some clubs, but they do offer favourable compensation when compared to Scotland’s top club.

Of course, any time Tottenham are linked with a left back recently you have to discuss whether or not the potential transaction is a reflection on Danny Rose’s status with the club. In this case, it seems to be an entirely separate issue. Tierney is a talented youngster but he isn’t ready to become a Champions League level starter right away. He’d be a purchase for the future as opposed to an immediate replacement for Rose.

For my money, the interest in Tierney is a clever gambit designed to remind Ryan Sessegnon that he isn’t the only young left back on the club’s radar. A move for Tierney isn’t out of the question, but it’s an unlikely transaction for this transfer window.
