Liverpool striker Divock Origi would help Spurs

Transfer dealings between Tottenham and Liverpool are relatively rare, but Spurs should consider making a move for Divock Origi. The Belgian striker is not in Jurgen Klopp’s plans at Anfield, but could prove to be a very useful player for Mauricio Pochettino.

Reports from England claim that Klopp now sees Origi as his fourth choice centre forward. Roberto Firmino, Daniel Sturridge and Dominic Solanke are all ahead of him on the Liverpool depth chart. Not surprisingly, that makes him a likely candidate to secure a summer move away from Anfield.

It just so happens that Tottenham are on the lookout for a striker to provide valuable cover for talisman Harry Kane. The prolific Englishman is firmly entrenched as Spurs’ number one centre forward, but the club have a gaping hole behind him. Vincent Janssen was purchased last summer to fill the position but he’s been a massive flop. The club haven’t completely given up on him, but it’s hard to see him turning things around after such a dismal start.

Even if Janssen stays, Pochettino would be smart to add a different sort of reserve striker. Janssen thrives by trying to hold up play and use his physicality to control the opposition. Tottenham would benefit greatly from a pacey centre forward who can play instead of or alongside Kane.

Origi isn’t a perfect player, but he could be the perfect solution to Tottenham’s lack of depth behind Kane. He’s shown a clear ability to score goals off the bench in the Premier League. Despite his struggles, he did manage to find the back of the net seven times for Klopp last season. That would represent a massive improvement over Janssen’s miniscule return last year.

Perhaps more importantly, the way he plays the game could allow him to find success with the Tottenham attack. When Janssen enters the match it tends to slow the Spurs offence down to a crawl. Origi would allow Pochettino’s troops to keep up their speedy pace even without Kane on the pitch.

As usual, this transfer question will likely boil down to an issue of price. If Liverpool aren’t insistent on charging Tottenham a premium due to their Premier League rivalry, it’s a move that could work financially for both sides. At a sum of somewhere around £12 million, it could be a win-win for two of England’s most talented clubs.
