Wanyama will be out of the Tottenham squad indefinitely

Tottenham have done a lot of things right during Mauricio Pochettino’s tenure, but providing accurate injury reports isn’t one of them. That’s precisely why Spurs fans are right to be concerned over the recent knee injury suffered by Victor Wanyama.

Sources at the club are now claiming that the Kenyan destroyer will miss “a few weeks” with a knock to his knee. Evidently he suffered the injury in training just before the Burnley match. It’s telling that club officials are being very nondescript about the particulars of his current malady.

The reality is there’s no telling when Wanyama might recover enough to rejoin Pochettino’s starting XI. The midfielder’s injury story is starting to sound a lot like two other prominent Spurs stars who have missed long spells of action.

The most concerning comparison is to Argentine attacker Erik Lamela. The talented midfielder has missed an entire calendar year of action with his teammates with a mysterious hip ailment. He went out of action last October and the club now hope that he can rejoin the first team in training sometime this October. There’s still no definite timeline for his return.

More from Tottenham Hotspur

One mysterious injury absence can be classified as a fluke, but Spurs have another ugly example. Originally, Danny Rose was only going to miss a few weeks after suffering a knee injury. Infamously, Rose was out of action for almost a month before finally electing to undergo the knee surgery that’s kept him out of the lineup until now. He, like Lamela, is allegedly nearing a return to the first team but there’s no target date in sight.

At this point, we have to acknowledge the possibility that Tottenham’s medical staff might be a problem. Players have a nasty habit of not returning anywhere close to their original schedule. Missing the return date by a match or two is one thing, missing it by months is a much bigger problem.

There’s also a chance that officials at Tottenham just aren’t honest with fans about injuries to their players. Perhaps Spurs doctors know the severity of the injuries, but the club elects to keep everyone in the dark about recovery timelines. This isn’t a comforting possibility for fans, but it might be a way to keep the rest of the Premier League off-balance.

No matter how you slice it, Victor Wanyama’s injury has the potential to become a massive issue for Tottenham. The lack of clear recovery timeline or specific details on his injury should be sounding massive alarm bells amongst the Spurs fan base. There’s no telling when he’ll make it back on the pitch for Mauricio Pochettino.
