Tottenham may upgrade their left back position this summer

Last summer, Tottenham proved they aren’t afraid to make bold moves to improve their options at fullback. Many scoffed when Spurs sold Kyle Walker, but they purchased a superior player in the form of Serge Aurier and turned a healthy profit. The club may be poised to do the same thing this summer at left back.

Despite Ben Davies’ excellent play as of late, there’s little question that Danny Rose is the club’s number one option when he’s fit. Unfortunately, he’s missed a mountain of time due to injury as  of late. That absence has transitioned him from being one of the club’s most indispensable players to someone who could certainly be sold in the next 12 months.

Just as the club did with Walker, they could command a King’s ransom for Rose’s services. Clubs like Manchester United or even Chelsea would be willing to pay upwards of £50 million for a healthy Rose. At that price, Spurs may once again be tempted to offload a star fullback.

Fortunately, Mauricio Pochettino and company already are making moves to line up a summer upgrade. Ironically, it might not cost Tottenham a single penny in transfer fees. Napoli left back Faouzi Ghoulam is out of contract with the Serie A club this year and is free to move to Spurs, or any other club, on a free transfer at season’s end.

More from Tottenham Hotspur

Ghoulam’s agent is already convinced that his client is set to leave Napoli. He made the simple statement that the star defender would have already signed a new deal with his current club if he wanted to stay. It’s hard to argue with that sort of logic. Napoli have already offered him what they believed was a reasonable new contract offer.

Their inability to lock Ghoulam down for the long haul provides Spurs with a massive opportunity. It’s not an exaggeration to say the Algerian is one of the best left backs in all of Europe at the moment. He already has two goals and three assists in just six league matches to start this season. That contributes to a stellar Whoscored.com player rating average of 7.97.

Not surprisingly, Tottenham have been strongly linked with a move for Ghoulam for months. He would provide the club a unique opportunity to sign a player for free who can strengthen the club while selling the incumbent starter for a massive profit. With a new stadium to pay for, that deal has to be music to Daniel Levy’s ears.
